The U.S. is home to over 4,000 native bee species, including 1,643 in California. That incredible number inspired National Geographic Explorer and bee expert Krystle Hickman to highlight our native bees, A to Z, by their scientific names in her new book The ABCs of California’s Native Bees. πŸ“”πŸ“·πŸ“‹πŸ–ŠοΈ

A decade of her photography and fieldwork, beautifully published by Heyday Books, reveals what’s often overlooked in our gardens and wild spaces:

β€œIn her debut book of natural history, she offers an intimate look at the daily habits of rare and overlooked native bees in California: those cloaked in green or black or red, that live alone in the ground or sleep inside flowers, that invade nests and pillage resources like infinitesimal conquerors, or that, unlike more generalist honeybees, are devoted exclusively to the pollen of a single type of flower.”

It was a treat to see her in conversation with @alieward of @ologies. 🎀✨

And if you’re in California or love its nature, definitely go find @beesip’s book in your local bookstore. βœ¨πŸ“–βœ¨

While honeybees get most of the attention, North America is home to around 4,000 native wild bee species that play critical roles as pollinators.

Native bees are powerful pollinators that can rival or even outperform honeybees when it comes to crops and gardens.

Creating a bee-friendly garden is one of the most direct ways to support pollinators in your neighborhood.
